Cross contamination happens - let's not ignore that. The really important thing in my view is that is it reported as soon as the issue is known - is investigated thoroughly by a competent body and steps are taken to minimise the possibility of similar circumstances happening again. No Forensic Services Supplier wants to be put in the position that LGC Forensics (and all the other suppliers I have had dealings with over the years) has recently found itself in with a known contamination case and they will do all they can to minimise the possibility. I believe it more likley that cross contamination may happen before items ever get to a laboratory - at the crime scene or within CSI departments but those are more difficult to test or monitor.
Knowing many of the people involved I have every faith in the Forensic Regulator in the UK and the various groups by which he assesses suppliers and Quality Systems and have no doubt that the police forces, laboratory and Regulator are working hard on the investigation and recommendations.
As the previous correspondent says - there is no perfect system - we can mitigate against the possibility as far as possible but there is always the opportunity for human error to kick in.
I do not know the detail of what happened in the current case but I have often been concerned with the time it takes for such issues to be raised with those who need to know so that miscarriages of justice can be avoided. It is vital that any suggestion of contamination is raised at the earliest possibility.
Looking forward to some more debate?

Another government agency I assume? That's all we need, several government agencies walking all over each other in the same investigation. Come on now! Some of us have not realized yet, there is NO perfect system. We can create and recreate until we are blue in the face. Start something new. Try something else. They will all have their own good and bad points. Don't reinvent the wheel, improve the one we have.
