UN Global road Safety Week (Geneva)

I kid you not but you should and will laugh when you read this.

This defence lawyer needs to challenge his head if he thinks “its unfair to have a set limit for everyone”…

Tell that to the paralysed man who was knocked over by a drink driver! Or the small child who was stood on the back seat of the car as his Dad (you can never call him a father) slams his car into a tree and the kid flies through the windscreen… or the innocent passer-by who is crossing the road at night when the drunk driver fails to stop at a red light and SLAMS into him…

Tell their families one limit is wrong, tell their families that they didn’t mean to do it, tell their families “they can handle their drink” ……

Lawyer challenges breathalyser law

Wednesday, February 23 2011

TWO beers make not a man drunk, a San Fernando Magistrate was told by an attorney who represented a man charged with driving under the influence.

“Medically, it cannot linger the finger,” attorney Ainsley Lucky told senior magistrate Rajendra Rambachan in the San Fernando Magistrates’ court in making a plea in mitigation for Allan Kamchan.

Kamchan was charged on Friday last with driving under the influence at Bonne Aventure, Gasparillo. He pleaded guilty and Lucky represented the man after the police court prosecutor, Dane Sorzano, disclosed that when tested, Kamchan was found to have 113 microgrammes of alcohol in his blood.

Lucky took issue with the Breathalyser law which was introduced in December, 2009, telling Rambachan that we live in an alcohol culture and the volume of alcohol would vary from person to person. “Two beers cannot hurt an old man and having one level for every driver appears an unfair application of this law,” said Lucky.

Rambachan asked the attorney to back-up his claim with scientific evidence and the attorney said that he had done research in Canada on the subject. Kamchan said he was 30 years old and apologised for drinking and opting to drive a truck ..

Rambachan ordered he pay $5,300 and disqualified him from driving for eight months.

Safety And BlackBerry Messenger

How Do You BBM?

by kalyhan
Of course every BlackBerry addict knows about RIM’s ongoing ad campaign promoting BlackBerry Messenger, but how exactly are the masses really using it?  What I’ve learned would not make any RIM campaign, I can assure you.

I’ll admit it, I am newer to the BlackBerry world than many of you.  I did have a Curve for a little while but moved back to my Palm Treo Pro while I waited (a long time) for the Bold 9650 to be released.

Like many newbies, I created a My Blackberry account and posted my pin without truly understanding what I was doing.  Silly me, I thought BBM was a wonderful tool used by professionals around the globe.  I thought the possibility of networking with a bunch of cool business people would be great. Like most things in life, I should have just Googled BBM before ever posting my pin.

I kid you not, within thirty seconds of posting my pin, I had several requests from users, asking to be added as a contact.  Within a mere ninety seconds, I had lots of requests.  And what do you know, they were all guys.  Not that I have anything against guys.  In actuality, all my BBM contacts are guys with the exception of one lady from MMA class.  I’d much rather talk football, geeky stuff and taxes than knitting and shopping (yeah, so I’m a little odd).  Well, many of these guys loved talking football and geeky stuff… taxes – not so much.  They quickly named their favorite teams, etc., etc.  This lasted for all of maybe ten minutes.  Then of course, the real BBM conversation kicked in.

Seriously, do 98% of BlackBerry users really need to know what I’m wearing day in, day out?  I think not.  I really don’t think you need photos of all your BBM contacts in various state of dress or undress either.  Is it too much to ask to have a normal conversation?  Talk about sports or life in your part of the globe, talk about geeky things.  Don’t ask to me to add you just so you can have another chick in your contact list.  I prefer to add geeky dudes anyway.

Now I will say I have “met” a few wonderful, professional BBM friends that I gladly keep in my contact list.  However, all the people who want to know what I’m wearing throughout the day or do nothing but send shirtless pictures of yourself along with dirty jokes and spam will be deleted… quickly, I might add.

I deleted my pin posting soon after releasing it on My BlackBerry.  I still get direct messages in my inbox at that site saying “I think we’d make great friends.” or “You’re so pretty, please add me.”.  Eh, no.  I won’t add you based of your request.  You’re the very type of of BBM contact I’m trying to avoid, so stop sending me direct messages.

I am at a point that I actually Google all pin numbers when I get a request now.  I think BlackBerry should add this in fine print to their BBM ad campaign videos from now on.  Surprisingly, you can learn a lot about a person if you Google their pin.  You get to see all the fun sites they’ve already posted their pin info to (if they’ve ever posted it) and often get a general overview of what kind of person they are.  Only then will I decide if I want to accept, ignore or decline their request (sometimes forever).

So unless you like “chatting” with anybody and everybody, I suggest you start Googling those pins from now on.

Editors note: There are a few warnings that come with this posting. Please remember that you never know who is at the other end of one of these messaging systems so dont agree to meet with anyone unless you are with friends or know the person already. And that does not mean you have been chatting with them for a year or so and they seem nice. Rapists, child molesters and other nasty people use systems like this to “show” you they are sane, safe and no threat but when you meet them its too late.

We don’t want you to get hurt so look after yourself and secure your PIN.

Have you seen my generator?

I know I am away from the office this week which is why I have been absent from posting on this blog but I had to bring you this little snippet of information as it made me laugh again.

Talk about incompetence!!!

$75,000 generator stolen from SAUTT

Wednesday, February 16 2011

POLICE from Northern Division are investigating the disappearance of an electrical generator worth $75,000 from the compound of the Special Anti-Crime Unit (SAUTT) offices in Cumuto.

Newsday was told that SAUTT officials realised the generator was missing two days ago and following an unsuccessful search, reported the theft to police.

This is the second industrial equipment/machinery to go missing from SAUTT’s compound in over two years.

It was reported that a CAT 320BL excavator valued $100,000 was seized by lawmen on January 14, 2009, at Block Three, Wallerfield.

The operator of the equipment was arrested and charged, while the machinery was taken to SAUTT’s compound at Wallerfield, where it was kept. The excavator was owned by Central businessman Babram Sookoo of Endeavour, Chaguanas.

A magistrate later ordered the equipment released to its owner. Sookoo went to the SAUTT compound to collect his excavator but it could not be found. A further check at the guard booth revealed that the diary and records relating to the particular month of January 2009 were also missing.

On June 8 2010, a letter was sent to the former Director of SAUTT Brigadier Peter Joseph to return the excavator within seven days or pay full compensation to its owner.

The Pirates will be back in the Caribbean…

Jack Sparrow

Image via Wikipedia

Hot on the heals of the declaration that the British Navy might stop protecting the waters of the Caribbean (here) comes this news that a Greek Supertanker has been hijacked off the coast of Oman.

And that the pirates are moving out from their traditional bases further and further(here).

Is it not making the powers that be think that with this restructuring of the Navy they may leave the waters off the Caribbean open for the return of Captain Jack Sparrow and his pirates?

Or is this a tactic by the British Government to “persuade” Trinidad & Tobago to complete the purchase of the three Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV).

A “You wont protect yourselves so we wont do it for you” tactic???

There are HUGE oil and gas refineries around south and central America and also Trinidad. Why are we not protecting them now?

We should be and if you are a shipping company or an oil company what are you doing about the protection of your assets at sea?

This tanker is carrying about $200 MILLION worth of oil… now that’s a lot of money and oil!

Not forgetting the cruise liners that have those lovely rich tourists on board! and NO PROTECTION!!!

Well, I am sorry but it’s about time someone stood up and started shouting.

Greek oil supertanker Irene hijacked off Oman

A supertanker carrying about $200m (£125m; 146m euros) worth of crude oil has been hijacked off the coast of Oman, the vessel’s Greek operator says.

Athens-based shipping company Enesel said they had lost communication with the Irene SL.

The vessel was on its way from the Gulf to the Gulf of Mexico when it was attacked.

Although the incident happened hundreds of miles from Somalia, pirate gangs are known to operate there.

“This morning the vessel was attacked by armed men,” said Enesel in a statement quoted by Reuters.

“For the moment there is no communication with the vessel.”

Greece’s Merchant Marine Ministry told the Associated Press that the ship was carrying 266,000 tons of crude oil.

It has a 25-member crew including seven Greeks, 17 Filipinos and one Georgian, according to the ministry.

The EU’s naval mission in the region EUNAVFOR said in a statement on its website the Irene was sailing 400 miles (650km) south-east of Muscat.

The incident comes a day after pirates took control of an Italian oil tanker in the Indian Ocean, some 800 miles from Somalia’s coast.

Before the latest incident, EUNAVFOR said pirates were currently holding 29 vessels along with an estimated 681 hostages.

Somali pirates have made millions of dollars in recent years by capturing cargo vessels in the shipping lanes around the Horn of Africa and holding the ships and crew for ransom.

Somalia has had no functioning central government since 1991, allowing piracy to flourish off its coast.

I don’t usually do this but I am copying and pasting an advert from the UWI here in Trinidad.
they have just published details of a lecture which is taking place tomorrow and i feel it should have wide participation from the public.

here are the details straight from their facebook pages;

Ann Marie Bissessar reveals how technology impedes money laundering regulations

Right on the heels of its first Professorial Inaugural Lecture of 2011, the St. Augustine Campus of The University of the West Indies (UWI), will host the second on Thursday 10th February – delivered by Professor Ann Marie Bissessar, Head of the Department of Behavioural Sciences and Professor of Government at The University. DNA tests to identify homeless man!!!

Skulls on a Beach: "Currents carry many d...

Image via Wikipedia

Trinidad - A pathologist from the Forensic Science Centre is expected to do DNA tests on the skeleton which was found scattered inside a storeroom of an abandoned Princes Town gas station on Saturday. Crimefighters, led by Sgt Don Gajadhar, are expected to go to the Forensic Science Centre this morning, where attempts will be made to extract samples from the bones to do DNA tests. Officers also said that attempts will also be made to identify the remains using dental records.

Investigators believe the man may have died more than a year ago. However, detectives said it was unclear whether the remains were dumped inside the gas station, or whether the man had died inside the room. The building where the remains were found, has been unoccupied for years. It was once used by employees of Moonan’s Gas Station, to house tyres and other supplies. On Saturday around 6 am, iguana hunter Lennox Charles said he was chasing lizards close to the dilapidated structure when he saw the bones. The skull had a tooth on the upper left side, and another tooth on bottom jaw of the right side. A greyish, blue-beaded necklace was found close to the skull.

Investigators said the man might have been a street dweller. Other street dwellers, however, told police that they were not missing any of their friends and they had no idea who the bones belonged to. Officers said they were forced to break down some burglar-proofing to gain access to the room. The remains were viewed by a District Medical Officer who ordered them removed to the Forensic Science Centre. Investigations are continuing.

Now what a waste of money this will be! Unless the Police and Forensic Science Centre have a comparison sample of “Missing Homeless Man” they are not going to achieve anything at all other than wasting money they claim they don’t have in the first place!

And I have to laugh at the news reporters use of “Crimefighters” What a laugh!!!

By the way this is reported in the Trinidad Guardian Newspaper here

Some Thoughts About Women’s Self Defence

Children Krav Maga Self Defence, Life Skills &...

When training for any type of self-defence it is important to train in context. If you are a woman who has decided to train to defend yourself you have already taken the first step (sometimes the hardest step). Now, you need to understand the nature of the crimes you are trying to defend against.

You should not only prepare yourself for the stranger in a ski mask jumping out from behind a parked car. Seven out of ten female sexual assault victims know their attacker. Of women who were murdered, 43% knew their assailant. 25% of violent crimes happen at, or near the victim’s home. 76% of violent crime occurs within five miles of the victim’s home. While reported incidence of weapons use during sexual assaults and rape are low, almost all homicides involve the use of a weapon. Nearly half of women who are robbed, are robbed by strangers. Over half of all robberies involve the use of a weapon (all figures from the USA).

With all of this in mind we can begin to understand the context of assaults against women. As Defence Focus Shooting Instructors we operate under the Plausibility Principle. This principle states that we “spend our limited training resources appropriately, relative to the likelihood of gaining useful value.” Ninjas may slide down your chimney and steal your jewellery, but it is far more likely that a drug addict will rob you in your driveway or your car will be hijacked. Train for what is likely not just for what sounds challenging, or cool.

When training in open hand self-defence try to find a school that teaches you a few very effective techniques that work in many situations. With traditional martial arts it may take years to develop the skills needed to defend yourself in a dynamic assault. By learning a few very effective options that work in a number of situations you limit the amount of time needed to decide how to defend yourself. Rapid violence of action which allows you the opportunity to deploy a weapon, or escape, is much more effective than a protracted fight with a larger stronger opponent. Shy away from “if he does this, you do that” type training.

If we only train in the gym, or on the square shooting range we are missing a lot. We need to experience training in real world scenarios. Practicing on pads in the middle of a big open room is good, but at close quarters in a small room with obstacles gives you a feel for the real world that you don’t get on the range, or in the gym. Seek out instructors / teachers that believe in progressive real world training. Do not limit yourself to one type of training. If you are currently only training in open hand martial arts, learn to use a firearm. If you only use firearms, learn some open hand self-defence techniques. Remember other options such as Taser, knives and pepper spray. You may be in a situation where you are unable to carry a firearm and unable to resolve the situation without a defensive weapon.

Here at C.P.D.M.S. Ltd a lot of our students are female. It is a heart breaking fact that nearly half of them come to us for training after they have already experienced some sort of assault. Do not wait until you have been attacked to begin training. Train now, train hard and train often. Seek out the best instructors you can find. Intuitive reality based training is more effective than heavily choreographed step-by-step training. Do not crawl then walk then run. Run, run as fast as you can, without falling.

We hope to see you in the training group soon.

New spy agency soon

I have posted this for our friends far away.

You will notice the configuration of the committee… I wonder who that person is???

AN IMPLEMENTATION committee to facilitate the merger of the Special Anti-Crime Unit (SAUTT), the Security Intelligence Agency (SIA) and the Strategic Services Agency (SSA) into one legal corporate body known as the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) will be put in place at the end of March.

Government sources revealed yesterday that the committee will comprise senior persons from the three units, as well as a foreign consultant. According to well placed sources, the committee will be responsible for disbanding the three units, choosing staff needed for the NIA and pooling together all machinery to have the NIA up and running.

When the committee completes this exercise, the recommendations will be taken to Parliament for the NIA to become the legal corporate body. However, in order to facilitate the formation of the NIA, Parliament should abolish the Strategic Services Agency (SSA) and the Act that created this agency should be repealed and replaced by the National Intelligence Agency Act, a Government source said yesterday. This body should be in place by September.

This means hundreds of persons employed at the three agencies could be out of jobs because of the duplication taking place. According to the Government source, at the end of March 31, police and Defence Force officers who were seconded to SAUTT will be required to return to the service which they came from, while the foreign police officers’ contracts at SAUTT will be terminated.

Retired officers who work on contract at SAUTT will report to the implementation committee, pending the merger of the three units. Newsday understands the headquarters for the NIA will be Riverside Plaza in Port-of-Spain, which now houses the SAUTT.

Yesterday operatives at the Strategic Services Agency (SSA) told Newsday while they have no problem with change, because change is inevitable, they feel that some of them may be victimised for various reasons, and they are eager to find out if they will be absorbed into the NIA or be given an excellent compensation package.
